One of them shows that Lord Marcus Sandys, the former governor of Bengal, returning to England in 1837, asked Worcester apothecaries to recreate the Indian sauce he had enjoyed during his service. Apothecaries could not reveal the secret of the sauce for a long time, experimenting with various ingredients, at first the sauce was unsuccessful.

All attempts were in vain - the sauce was too spicy and unpleasant to the taste. The pharmacists decided to do other things, and left the mixture in the spacious pharmacy basement. What was the surprise of the inventors when they returned to their forgotten recipe after a few years - the sauce matured and got an amazing taste! The whole city tasted the sauce, and later - the fame of the amazing taste spread to all continents.

This sauce is said to be one of the oldest fermented sauces in the world. In 1862, he was awarded the Royal Order of Merit.
